How a Toilet Flushes
How a Toilet Flushes

When the tank lever's handle is pressed, it lifts the flapper/tank ball by a chain/wire. This opens the flush valve and releases water through the rim into the toilet bowl, where gravity siphons the existing bowl water down the trap.

Once the tank is empty, the flapper/tank ball drops back onto the flush valve seat, and the fill valve triggers an influx of fresh water into the tank. The fill valve float cup/float ball rises with the water until the preset refill level is reached.

Basic Areas of Toilet Repair

FILL
FILL components refill the toilet tank after it has been emptied by a flush.

Click here for details on how the Fluidmaster valve works.

FLUSH
FLUSH components control the release of water from the tank into the toilet bowl once the tank lever/handle has been pressed.

CONNECT
Most toilets CONNECT between areas like the water supply, toilet bowl, seat or floor, and require special parts for secure, durable attachment.

WARNING
The lifespan and effectiveness of the flush/fill components mentioned above are impaired by in-tank toilet bowl cleaners containing chlorine. Such cleaners create high levels of chlorine in the tank water, which can warp or corrode tank parts, leading to leaks and potential property damage.

Use of in-tank chlorine cleaners will void Fluidmaster product warranties. For a safer alternative, try the Flush 'N' Sparkle Toilet Bowl Cleaning System.
